Safe Routes to School: Foothill Farms
Project Background
As a result of school administration’s concern for student safety near Foothill Ranch Middle School following the death of a middle school student who was hit and killed by a vehicle in 2017 while biking to school, Safe Kids Coalition and WALKSacramento received a Kids Plates grant to host a non-infrastructure Safe Routes to School Program for three schools in the Twin Rivers Unified School District. This program engaged students, families, and community partners including the Black Child Legacy Campaign and UC Berkley SafeTREC at three neighborhood schools all within a quarter-mile radius of each other (Woodridge Elementary, Foothill Ranch Middle, and Foothill High) with a focus on safety education and student-led priorities for built environment traffic safety improvements.
