Safe Routes to School: Yuba County
Project Background
WALKSacramento has worked with the Olivehurst community on Safe Routes to School efforts since 2012. At first, our work focused on Ella Elementary School, located just under a mile from Yuba Gardens Intermediate School. We found the school community and broader community enthusiastic and supportive of efforts to improve pedestrian and bicycle access in the area. In 2012, with support from Yuba County and the Olivehurst community, we formed the Yuba County Safe Routes to School Coaltion to address the safety and accessibility of walking and biking to school in the area. The coalition involved school administration, Marysville Unified School District staff, Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, Olivehurst Fire Department, Yuba County Public Works and other community members. The Yuba County Safe Routes to School Coalition met quarterly over the period of 2013-2015 to discuss ways to increase the number and safety of students walking and biking safely to school. WALKSacramento created the Yuba County Safe Routes to School Walk/Bike to School Program Guide for the coalition as a sustainability plan to continue efforts already in place. We are excited to continue efforts in the Olivehurst community once again in support of ongoing pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure project at Ella Elementary, Olivehurst Elementary, and Yuba Gardens Intermediate.
